Event Description

May reunited with her old partner Mike Nichols for this remake of the popular French-Italian comedy La Cage aux Folles, which became a huge hit and garnered May her third of four Writers Guild of America nominations. Relocating the story from St. Tropez to South Beach, Florida, The Birdcage features Robin Williams as Armand, the owner of a gay cabaret and husband to Albert (Nathan Lane), his star performer. When Armand’s son (Dan Futterman) announces his engagement to the daughter (Calista Flockhart) of an ultra-conservative senator (Gene Hackman) and asks his dad to play it straight at the meeting of the two families, Armand reluctantly agrees — but Albert has considerably more trouble keeping his extra in check. Gleefully mocking right-wing homophobia, The Birdcage is “one of the loopiest, most hysterical family-values movies ever made” (Hal Hinson, The Washington Post).
