Event Description

Baby-voiced blonde Marilyn Monroe and brash brunette Jane Russell embark on a European cruise in search of love and loot in Howard Hawks’ classic musical comedy.

Howard Hawks’ riotous comedy about showgirls Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell), “two little girls from Little Rock” who believe that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and set sail on a yacht to Europe to find as many best friends as possible. Hawks’ gaudy, glorious version of Anita Loos’ tale of two buxom buddies plays on the contrasts between the breathy, blonde, baby talking Marilyn as the gold-digging Lorelei and Jane’s raven and ravenous, tough but tender-hearted Dorothy—the first is looking for loot, the other for love, and Hawks swaddles them in skins and feathers and plumage, all the better to complicate their roles as both predator and prey. Full of hilarious misadventures and wild musical numbers—Jane’s “Ain’t There Anyone Here for Love?”, performed in a gymnasium full of oblivious musclemen, is a study in fifties homo iconography—Gentlemen Prefer Blondes generates much of its giddy good humour from the extraordinary rapport between its two stars. “A landmark encounter in the battle of the sexes! Hawks keeps topping perversity with perversity!” (Dave Kehr).
